About the company

A newly formed, well-capitalised technology company is building a next-generation operating platform for a highly fragmented, workflow-heavy industry. The business combines software, data, and operational execution to replace manual, spreadsheet-driven processes with automated, scalable systems. They are hiring a Founding Engineer to architect and build the technical foundation of the platform from first principles.

This is an in-office role based in New York City.

About the role

You will operate as the first senior engineering hire, working directly with executive leadership and operational teams to translate strategy into shipped software. The role is highly hands-on and focused on launching production systems quickly while laying foundations that scale over time.

You will design and build workflow engines, internal tools, dashboards, and integrations that automate core operational processes. This includes establishing data models, pipelines, and observability, building integration frameworks across third-party systems, and introducing applied AI capabilities for decision support and anomaly detection.

In parallel, you will define engineering standards, make build-vs-buy decisions, and help shape the early engineering culture, including hiring, mentoring, and scaling the team over time.

Requirements:

  • 7–12 years of experience as a senior or staff-level engineer, with a strong hands-on track record
  • Experience building v1 products in workflow-heavy domains (e.g. fintech, marketplaces, operations platforms)
  • Strong backend and integration experience (APIs, workflow engines, data stores)
  • Solid data fundamentals, including schema design, pipelines, and analytics foundations
  • Sufficient frontend experience to ship polished internal tools and dashboards
  • Proven ability to ship under constraints and make pragmatic trade-offs
  • Experience mentoring engineers and working with mixed delivery models (in-house and external)
